Snow abates, but temperatures remain below freezing today

After a downpour of rain and snow Wednesday, Lawrence should expect a milder forecast today but cold temperatures.

Sarah Jones, 6News meteorologist, said light snow may continue until the early morning hours today. A snow advisory issued by the National Weather Service expires at 6 a.m.

“By morning rush hour it should be done and out,” she said. “(Today) winds will be shifting to the southwest and will be lighter in the afternoon. By afternoon we’ll have mostly cloudy skies.”

Today’s high will be 29 degrees with an overnight low of 16. Friday’s high will be 27 degrees and the low will be 5 degrees.

There is a slight chance of snow Friday, but Jones said not to expect any accumulation.

That may be a welcome change after Wednesday’s snowfall caused a flurry of traffic accidents in the city. The Lawrence Police Department reported 15 accidents from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
