March of Dimes event gets new name

WalkAmerica, the March of Dimes’ largest fundraising event, has been renamed March for Babies.

Laura Lesko, state director of communications for the March of Dimes Greater Kansas Chapter, said the name change reinforces the organization’s mission to improve the health of babies. The nonprofit organization works to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The new name is part of a larger initiative focused on babies born healthy as well as those who need help to survive and thrive.

The Lawrence March for Babies will begin at 9 a.m. April 26 at South Park at 11th and Massachusetts streets. Funds raised support research grants focused on issues related to premature birth and community programs.
