Baylor D holds KU in check

? Off to its first 3-0 start in the Big 12, Baylor is in uncharted territory.

Rachel Allison scored 13 points to lead No. 6 Baylor to a 59-35 victory over Kansas on Wednesday night.

“I was glad I was able to rest a lot of players and rotate the players in the game early and this particular group is the first team I coached at Baylor to start out 3 and 0 in the Big 12 so they need a pat on the back,” Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said.

Jessica Morrow, returning from a one-game suspension, added eight points for the Bears (15-1, 3-0 Big 12), who improved to 3-0 in the conference for the first time.

LaChelda Jacobs scored nine to lead Kansas (11-5, 0-3) and Taylor McIntosh added eight.

Baylor had this one in hand early, taking a 20-9 lead with 7:43 left in the first half when Danielle Wilson converted a three-point play. The Bears closed the period on an 11-0 run to take a 33-13 lead at the break.

“They are very athletic, very skilled,” Kansas coach Bonnie Henrickson said. “I think (Angela) Tisdale is the pulse and the heart of this group. Usually when they need to make a run, that’s who starts the run.”

Tisdale had another off game from the field. Baylor’s leading scorer at 14.7 points, Tisdale had just seven. She was 3-for-14 for the second consecutive game.

“She got impatient,” Mulkey said. “You give shooters the green light and sometimes they shoot before passing. She took a couple of bad shots tonight, but that doesn’t concern me. She has a shooter’s mentality.”

Baylor had a six-minute stretch in the first half when it didn’t make a single field goal, but still held an eight-point lead.

Allison’s rebound and putback with 14:23 remaining put Baylor up 12-5. The Bears hit just free throws over the next six minutes before Jhasmin Player’s layup with 8:17 left gave Baylor a 17-9 advantage.

Kansas opened the second half on an 8-2 run with Krysten Boogaard converting a three-point play to begin the run. But the Jayhawks couldn’t get any closer than 14 the rest of the game.
