Krause Dining and its seven-table, in-home restaurant adjacent to an east Lawrence bus barn is one of the can't-miss places in the world to dine this year, according to Food & Wine magazine.
The restaurant, 917 Del., rates among the "100 best" recipes, restaurants and wines listed in the magazine's January issue.
The Krause operation checked in at No. 11 on the list of "tastes to try" in 2008 when traveling, just outside a top 10 headed by the new Shangri-La Abu Dhabi in the Persian Gulf.
Coming in at No. 12: Pebble Beach Food & Wine, a "celeb-studded" tasting event that draws stars such as Michael Mina and Jacques Pepin.
Now, with Krause Dining wedged firmly in between - the magazine dubbed the restaurant "Kansas' new food scene," offering "stunning dishes like scallops with fire-roasted tomato" - a wider range of diners with discerning tastes are making reservations.
"Now we're getting calls from people from way out of town, and out of state, about coming here to eat - people who are really into food," said Robert Krause, who owns and operates the place with his wife, Molly. "For these people, it's nothing to fly into Kansas City and come on over to eat."
Krause said he'd already received a congratulatory phone call from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (he's done catering for her), and he considers the recognition especially welcome, given that it wasn't until April that the city granted him a permit to operate the business that the Krauses had been running for several years out of their residence.

I hope they cleaned the basement real good. When I was a kid we took our trapping furs to the basement there to sell. I swear they had a sign that said they paid for cat hides. Probably 25 years ago. I think it was called Whales or Wales?
