Ineffective action

To the editor:

Nancy Boyda’s co-sponsored legislation is nothing more than an election year attempt to convince voters that she and the Democratically controlled Congress are trying to address the illegal immigration issue. This is nothing more than a bullet point she can put on her re-election brochure.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there are plenty of Republicans who are doing the same things (but I know there are numerous other Journal-World readers who won’t hesitate to let us know if that is the case).

The legislation, as I understand it, tries to focus on ways for employers to detect those employees who are here illegally. This is a good idea but it is probably Step No. 7 in dealing with this issue. If you have a pipe that has burst in your basement you aren’t going to focus on cleaning your carpet until you have eliminated the source of the leak. In the same way, until we are able to shore up the borders any legislation we are going to undertake will be largely ineffective.

I know Rep. Boyda wants to impress her constituents but she would be much more impressive if she were to actually tackle some of the problems facing Northeast Kansas.
