Consultants combine growth, service

Service: BG Consultants, 1405 Wakarusa Drive

The past few years have been filled with growth for the Lawrence office of BG Consultants and, if everything goes according to plan, business will double again soon.

It’s that increased business that made BG Consultants an ideal choice for one of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce’s 2007 Excellence in Commerce awards, said Lavern Squier, chamber president and chief executive officer.

“We were looking for an existing Lawrence company that experiences growth both in people and had a change in their company,” Squier said. “We were looking for a company that had tried to advance itself.”

Cecil Kingsley, managing partner for BG Consultants in Lawrence, said the firm brings millions of dollars to Lawrence each year. The company handles a variety of engineering, architectural and surveying projects, including as clients a number of local companies and cities.

Kingsley said in the past five years, the Lawrence office has been able to double the amount of business it handles. That wouldn’t have been possible without a singular focus on the customer.

“The only way you grow a business is to have repeat business,” Kingsley said. “And we want to double our business again in the next five years.”

The company did the architectural work behind the new Crown Automotive building as well as its own building at Bob Billings Parkway and Wakarusa Drive. It’s the city engineer for Tonganoxie, Eudora, Oskaloosa and several other towns.

BG Consultants also was responsible for coordinating the waterline replacement project that took place the last few summers in downtown Lawrence.

“Everyone seemed happy with it. That project is being submitted for awards right now,” Kingsley said. “The most difficult place you can do work is in a central business district, especially when it has your oldest infrastructure.”

BG Consultants came to Lawrence 20 years ago with just four employees. Now they have 25, and the company brings about $3 million to the Lawrence economy annually, Kingsley said.

“We’re constantly trying to grow. We’re a growth-oriented company, and we’re constantly try to expand our professional staff,” Kingsley said. “We want to provide outstanding service.”
