Skating rink plans
To the editor:
I read the article on Dec. 25 about the boy wanting an ice-skating rink in Lawrence, so his parents wouldn’t be driving him to other locations to skate. I thought it was admirable for him to speak up. The article mentioned his father, employed by Landplan Engineering, was helping to promote the idea. If Landplan Engineering donated its time/expenses for designing a skating rink, that would be great. If an ice rink is necessary to meet the needs of the small group of people who would consistently use it, initiate a building fund drive to pay for construction and operation. I am sure businesses, who would profit from an ice rink, and skating supporters, would be enthusiastic about donating money and getting a tax deduction, too.
A letter to the editor on Dec. 29 stated a teen wanted a skating rink because he wants a place to have fun, play games, watch movies, talk with friends, and is tired of being kicked out of other places. I didn’t see the words “because I enjoy skating.” Helping with housework/yardwork and giving mom and dad a break would prevent boredom. What happened to that mountain of homework we keep hearing about?
Another cost-effective solution would be for the family to move closer to the skating rink so he can pursue his sport. The T and Eagle Bend have never operated in the black. Lawrence taxpayers don’t need another great financial drain. Ever noticed the number of foreclosed homes listed in the paper?
