Stranded boaters rescued at Clinton Lake

Two people stranded on a sailboat at Clinton Lake on Monday afternoon made it to safety without injuries, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Division Chief Joe Hoelscher said.

Hoelscher said two people were trying to recover a 22-foot sailboat from the lake when wind pushed the boat into more open water. The boat’s rudder broke, Hoelscher said, and the boat, which did not have a motor, was at the mercy of the wind. It drifted to the southern side of the lake and was stuck about 30 feet offshore, he said. The boaters had a cell phone, but the battery was dead, Hoelscher said.

One of the boaters got out of the boat and made it to land, flagged down a car and called emergency crews about 6 p.m., Hoelscher said. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical launched a rescue boat from Clinton Marina and navigated across the lake and located the second person. Both boaters were treated and released at the scene, Hoelscher said. During the rescue, crews called for a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter to assist, but the helicopter was canceled, he said. No further information was available on the boaters Monday night.
