Judge drops teacher’s misdemeanor charge
A judge Monday approved dismissal of a misdemeanor charge against a former Lawrence teacher convicted of having sex with a student.
The dismissal will not affect the nearly five-year prison sentence she has received.
Meredith L. Kane, 24, had faced one count of violation of a protective order because she continued to see the victim – now a 16-year-old boy – after her guilty plea. In July, Kane pleaded guilty to one count of felony indecent liberties with a child.
Douglas County District Court Judge Stephen Six on Dec. 18 sentenced Kane to serve 59 months in prison for the felony conviction.
In August, prosecutors filed the misdemeanor violation of a protective order charge against her so Six would revoke her bond and keep her in jail until her sentencing.
After Six handed down the 59-month sentence, prosecutors filed to drop the misdemeanor charge.
Kane was a first-year English teacher at Lawrence High School until her arrest in March. The boy was 15 during the time of the relationship, which lasted several months.
