Power of hope

To the editor:

The Feb. 20 column by Cal Thomas, “Untested Obama is risky choice,” is the most negative, cynical writing that the Journal-World has recently published. Thomas compares Barack Obama with John and Robert Kennedy who, he said, are examples of the “dangers of hope” and what can happen when such hopes are crushed.

Thomas claims that in the ’60s, after the Kennedys were assassinated, such “crushed hope” produced rebellion, anarchy and despair. For some unfounded reasons, he personally fears the same thing may occur if Obama should be elected.

Unfortunately for Thomas and his great fears, Obama has won primary election victories in 10 states in a row by wide margins and now has the most delegates. Thomas’ negative efforts to stop the momentum are only too transparent. Hillary Clinton, as well as Republican supporters, are doubtless cheering him on.

“Hope is a dangerous thing,” writes Thomas. I should like to offer him two other quotes: “Who can live without hope?” by Carl Sandburg and “Great hopes make great men,” by Thomas Fuller.
