Alarming tally

To the editor:

On Jan. 19, this paper printed an Associated Press article about the face of abortion. It quoted many statistics about and reasons for abortion. The silence has been deafening regarding this alarming article.

In the 35 years since Roe v. Wade, roughly 50 million abortions have occurred. This is approximately one sixth of our population. We have lost more than a generation of our citizens because we chose to. Some of the reasons given for getting an abortion were: “because of their wish to be good parents” and “making a very serious decision about their reproductive health.” No reasons were given relating to life-threatening conditions related to the mother or for using birth control for reproductive health. It is alarming the reasons given for terminating life versus the need for prevention.

We have memorials to our war dead, and we thank them for their sacrifice so we and others may live in freedom. Where are the memorials and thanks to the innocents who have died so we can be good parents, or for family economics, or so we do not have to live with a disabled child?

If we had an event that killed 50 million people we would demand a response to see this never happened again. We have had an ongoing event for 35 years. Until society is sufficiently revulsed and demands change through dialogue and solutions, society will get what it tolerates, 50 million dead innocents and counting.
