Wreck sends 2 to hospital

A two-car collision in east Lawrence severely injured two people, fracturing one Lawrence High School graduate’s neck.

Officials had few details on the wreck, which occurred at the intersection of 23rd Street and Anderson Road. A red Alfa Romeo Spider and a maroon Chevrolet Monte Carlo collided in the eastbound lane of 23rd Street, sending the cars spinning into the opposite lane.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Ann Duran, 65, was taken by ambulance to the parking lot of the Knights of Columbus, 2206 E. 23rd St., before being taken by air ambulance to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. The driver of the other car, 28-year-old Ali Taghavi-Aghtai, was initially transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, then was taken to KU Hospital later Sunday evening. Lawrence Police Sgt. Damon Thomas said Taghavi-Aghtai suffered a fractured neck.

A nursing supervisor at KU Hospital could neither confirm nor deny their presence and could not provide a condition update.
