$1,800 dog shoplifted, returned to pet store

? A woman may face a felony charge after police alleged she shoplifted a Yorkshire puppy from a Wichita pet store.

The woman was identified after television stations broadcast surveillance footage from the Petland of the woman placing the dog in her large, black handbag and then leaving the store.

Store employees, who said they received numerous anonymous calls after the footage aired, said the woman had asked to look at the puppy for possible purchase and adoption.

The store’s owner, Colleen Bradley, reclaimed the dog Friday after Detective Brad Crumley said a friend of the suspect brought the dog in.

Capt. Darrell Haynes said police have ordered the woman’s arrest. Because the dog is worth $1,800, she could face a charge of felony theft.

Bradley said the dog will be taken to a veterinarian to make sure she’s healthy and then put back up for adoption.

“She will be put back with her brother, who is also in the store,” she said. “He has been pretty lonely.”
