‘No’ on tax hike

To the editor:

Mr. Bartlett’s letter about selling his house and the rising property taxes of which the school district is responsible for (look at the tax breakdown) leads me to make one suggestion to the school board.

Stop stroking your egos and do the right thing and do not have an election to raise the mill levy. Set an example of fiscal responsibility.

Make the Lawrence school district an example of how to operate more efficiently. Instead of following the pack of Johnson county schools, become innovative and cut your budget. Build a surplus. Buy goods more efficiently and use what you buy. Do not haul off a cargo van full of paint to be recycled. Certainly, a gallon of it could have been used to paint those basement doors at Central, Mr. Braccianno, that we talked about over three years ago.

Millions of dollars for bond issues and Central is still shabby outside.

The school board needs to rescind its decision to have an election.

There is still time for the board to save face. Do the right thing. Say “no” before the voters hopefully say “no.”
