Carjacking victim still without transportation

Lawrence resident Barbara Williams is relying on rides from her daughter and friends after being the victim of a carjacking last month, she said.

Williams was among the victims of a Jan. 31 crime spree that included two stolen vehicles and several others that were smashed during a high-speed chase. A judge last week ordered Edward Wise to stand trial on charges stemming from the incident.

Longtime Kansas University faculty member Harry Shaffer, professor emeritus of economics, has started a fund to raise money for a new car for Williams. He established the fund with $50 and is hoping a car dealership might offer a vehicle for Williams at a reduced cost. He reported on Friday that more than $350 had been raised. Contributions to the fund should be sent to Douglas County Bank, ATTN: Mail Teller, c/o Barbara Williams Fund, P.O. Box 429, Lawrence, KS 66044.
