Winter storm hits area; events canceled

Weather forecasters say our area will see very strong north-northwest winds today, with gusts up to 40 mph. We should have a high temperature today near 35 degrees under generally cloudy skies.

The Kansas Department of Transportation reports both eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 435 now are open. The highway had been closed since about 10 a.m. because of a traffic accident.

In addition, Kansas City International airport now is open, after being closed for nearly six hours because of heavy snow and slush. The closing today led to the canceling of dozens of flights. Airport spokesman Joe McBride said the airport’s runways were closed around 6:30 a.m. when friction testing showed conditions were too slick to safely operate aircraft.

“A 150 mph aircraft hydroplaning is not a good thing,” McBride said.

Kansas City International sees about 440 flights a day.
