Watkins change

February 16, 2008

To the editor:

First Steve Jansen, then Rebecca Phipps. Who will the Watkins Museum hire - and fire! - next?

What do they want in a director? A highly trained professional with a mastery of his/her field, a hard-working, personable person with management skills and the ability to work with people and to interest the nonhistory-minded in history? Obviously not. Then what?

And have these needs and requirements been made clear to those they hire? It's so easy to fire someone, so hard - maybe impossible - to undo the harm done.

Whatever became of the insurance settlement for the damage to the building caused by the microburst a couple of years ago?

Hire Steve back. Big mistake when they let him go.

Mr. Mueller, don;'t you realize that by now the Board of Directors is the problem. It is too big. Full of egos rubbing shoulders. First of all, someone needs to decide what the purpose of the building is? Who owns it? Who maintains it? What is it for? Is it a trinket shop or a warehouse or what? Who actually oversees the museum? Watkins will amount to not much of anything until the board is cleaned out and replaced with folks who have vision, Dolph talks about that all the time, with folks who have a plan as to what Watkins Museum is going to be about. What is the connection now to this Destination Management business, that is going to get funds? Is this another job for someone and a way to get county money, for an operation that is as Commissioner Chestnut would refer to , transparent? This town is wrapped in cellophane but not very transparent.

What is the purpose of the building? How are the members on the board selected? What qualifications do they need? Do they truly represent the Douglas County populace or are they pawns of the Historical Society which is not very inclusive, but rather again, another ego stroking club.

Whatever is decided and whoeve is running the show, no more public money to Watkins until those who are supposedly in charge come up with a plan and raise money on their own. Dolph talks today about a capital campaingn for giving at KU, why doesn';t he tackle the Watkins museum leadership. It keeps changing and nothing happens, Hemenway won't leave and nothing happens. This nothingness is representative of Lawrence, huh?
