Identigen co-founder wants clones’ DNA
Patrick Cunningham, chairman and co-founder of Identigen Ltd., the parent company of Lawrence-based Identigen North American Inc., today plans to urge meat producers to make the DNA of cloned animals public.
Cunningham said that such disclosure would help meat producers and retailers satisfy anticipated consumer desires to avoid meat and milk from cloned animals, by using DNA traceability technology.
Cunningham is scheduled to make his case today in Boston, during a conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The push comes after the FDA agreed last month to allow human consumption of products from cloned animals and their offspring.
Identigen’s core technology allows producers and retailers to trace a particular cut of meat from its source animal all the way to a retail shelf.
Once a DNA database of clones is established, a program can be applied to any supply chain to verify whether clones are present, said Cunningham, in a preview of his presentation, “Dolly for Dinner.”
