Worth the time

To the editor:

My family attended the same Democratic caucus last week as Richard Hassur with a completely different experience. We arrived at 6:15 p.m. and, accepting that no individual was responsible for the weather, found volunteers directing people to the appropriate line and moving us through a physical bottleneck as efficiently as the situation allowed.

More than half of the people waiting in line had not registered as Democrats. The same caucus four years ago had 80 participants. It is hard to plan for people who had not yet declared themselves. My son was one of those directed to Liberty Hall, where he completed registration and cast his vote. He was ready to leave by 9 p.m.

To paraphrase Hassur, “The really good part of this event was that such a large group of mostly young people cared enough to take the time to participate and register their opinion toward selecting a future leader of our country.”

People who can’t find time for democracy don’t deserve democracy.
