Rising taxes

To the editor:

I have been following the conversations in the paper regarding property taxes and would like to point out that a number of years ago, city commissioners told us that property taxes would go down as a result of rental registration. They also told us that home prices would drop and single-family buyers would move back to supposed single-family neighborhoods, keeping neighborhood schools open.

Well, they were wrong on all three. Centennial was closed. Home prices have steadily increased as did property taxes. I should thank them for helping create the rental registration program. I am grateful as I sold my properties and was able to cash out. The new owners of my properties live in these homes, but nothing changed. Property taxes and home prices have continued to increase. Now the Lawrence school district wants more money; thus increasing taxes and causing home ownership costs to go up.

After thinking about this, I hope everyone in Lawrence votes for every increase in taxes that comes along until it becomes so expensive to live in Lawrence that common sense might again prevail.
