Caucus fan

To the editor:

While standing in line for the caucus on Tuesday night, I heard some complaints, too. Some wished we had a primary; we were standing outside for a long time in cold and miserable weather, and there was no parking.

I would like to offer another perspective. A caucus is an up-close and personal way to be involved in our government. It was invigorating to be in the crowds of people who are passionate about this election. In what other country could we freely go en masse to participate in choosing our next leader? In some countries, people stand in lines like that just to get food. We’re lucky and privileged.

I’m excited that so many people wanted to be there. I’m just sorry you weren’t in our line, where we chose to turn miserable conditions into an enjoyable experience. We were sharing umbrellas, helping each other jump ditches, getting the people with kids to the front of the line and even doing a little electioneering.

I’m thankful I had the opportunity to participate.
