March numbers
To the editor:
Sometimes our media is misleading in its descriptions. In the Jan. 23 Journal-World, there was a brief about the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. The brief reported “thousands” attended this march. This leads the average reader to assume this means just a few thousand – maybe three or four thousand.
What it failed to mention is that the numbers of those attending continue to increase year after year. In the first year of this march celebrating life at all its stages, 1974, approximately 20,000 people rallied in Washington, D.C. By now, these numbers have increased more than ten-fold. During each of the previous five marches, over 200,000 men, women, children, and especially young adults have participated. Numbers have not been posted for this year’s march, but having been there for 11 of the past 13 years, I can attest that this year’s group was yet again huge, easily reaching 200,000 people.
This march, with its “thousands” reported, is one of the largest marches in D.C. throughout the year. We come to celebrate the lives we have each been given, but we also celebrate every human life – from the very beginnings at conception to each person’s natural end. Coming from nearly every state, we march to let all, especially those in government, know we stand for life, we vote for pro-life candidates, and we aren’t going away. We’ll be back again and again with our prayers and our voices lifted high.
