Caucus chaos

To the editor:

As a two-year resident of Kansas, I never experienced a caucus until Tuesday. I hope never to do so again. I was at the fairgrounds with 2,200 others. It was not the fault of overworked volunteer organizers, but things did not go well. After standing in a check-in line for 35 minutes, many of us found our names were not in the registration book even though we were registered. We had to fill out a form and go into another line for 15-20 minutes. One woman registered for 30 years was not in the book, but her husband was. What’s up with that?

I hope the problems of that evening will be cleared up by Election Day or another system put in place for problems. I wonder if it is just Democrats with problems or if Republicans also will have problems.

The state Legislature should appropriate money for a primary so everyone’s vote counts. I spoke with people who did not understand that this took the place of a primary. I spoke with others who turned up at their regular polling place to vote. Communication was terrible and the state Legislature is to blame. They should appropriate money for a primary so that everyone’s vote counts, and not dump the process on volunteers. This kind of chaos is unforgivable in a democracy.
