Suspect arrested in gas station shooting

A suspect in last week’s shooting and attempted robbery at a Lawrence gasoline station and convenience store is in the Leavenworth County Jail.

In a news release issued Wednesday, Lawrence police said an arrest warrant had been issued for Emmanuel Lee Ross, 23, of Leavenworth, alleging attempted second-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery. Ross was arrested Tuesday night in Leavenworth County on an unrelated matter, Lawrence police Capt. Mike Pattrick said.

The Lawrence warrant stems from an incident the night of Jan. 30 at Speedway Shell, 1733 Mass. The store owner, Sameer Sangam, said a man armed with a gun tried to rob him as he was closing his store shortly after 11 p.m.

Sangam said he was walking to his car carrying a bag of rock salt when a man with a gun stepped from behind an ice machine and demanded money. Sangam responded by hitting the man with the salt bag. The two struggled and the man started to run away. Sangam said as he headed back inside the store to call police, the gunman fired one shot, striking the store’s front window frame.

Sangam was not seriously injured, suffering a cut to the head when the would-be robber struck him with the gun.

The Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office and Leavenworth police provided valuable assistance to Lawrence police in apprehending Ross, Pattrick said. No other information was released, and it was not known when Ross would be brought to Douglas County.
