Hearings scheduled in crime spree case
Some of the evidence prosecutors have against a man charged in a high-speed police chase and carjacking incident will be presented in court later this month.
A preliminary hearing for Edward James Wise, 23, has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday before Douglas County District Court Judge Michael Malone.
Wise was arrested the night of Jan. 31 in downtown Lawrence after a crime spree that included two stolen vehicles and four crashed vehicles during the police chase. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper shocked Wise with a Taser as Wise reportedly tried to walk away while holding a gun to his own head.
During Wednesday’s court hearing, Wise and his attorney, Craig Stancliffe, asked Malone to reduce his bond from $250,000 to $25,000. Wise told the judge he wanted to go to a hospital to get treatment for a pre-existing gunshot wound and an infection. He also said his girlfriend is pregnant and his birthday is a few weeks away.
Malone said he wanted to hear the evidence at the preliminary hearing before deciding whether to reduce the bond.
Wise is charged with one count of aggravated robbery, two counts of aggravated assault with a handgun, two counts of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle and one count of fleeing or attempting to elude police. He is being held in Douglas County Jail.
