KU ophthalmology chair earns seat on board

Dr. John E. Sutphin, professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Kansas University Medical Center, recently was named a member of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

The voluntary board works to serve the public by improving the quality of ophthalmic practice through a physician certification program that fosters excellence and encourages continual learning.

As a board member, Sutphin helps develop questions for certification exams, assists in developing the process for recertification, and directs initial exams.

Sixteen doctors are members of the board of directors.

“This appointment puts KU on the map and increases the chance students would select us for their residency,” Sutphin said. “It helps demonstrate that KU is a leader.”

Sutphin has been a part of the organization since his certification in 1981.
