The Kansas Department of Transportation has awarded Tonganoxie $250,000 in federal funds through the Safe Routes to School Program.

The federal funding will assist the city with construction of several sidewalks and traffic-calming improvements around Tonganoxie Elementary and Tonganoxie Middle schools.

In addition, the award provides funding for the first year of a School Resource Officer in the Tonganoxie Police Department. The city and school district will be responsible for continuing funding for the position after the first year.
