Lawrence police investigating string of late-night burglaries at businesses

Ten Lawrence businesses were burglarized late Monday night, police said. The front doors of the businesses were shattered and cash and other items were stolen.

Several hundred dollars in liquor was stolen from the bar of Scarlet Orchid, 2223 La., owner Charles Hung said.

“They took our trash can … and they dumped out all the trash and used that as a container,” said Hung. “They were in and out probably in less than three minutes.”

Hai Tran, owner of Nail Expressions, 2223 La., said he received a phone call from police in the middle of the night telling him his store had been burglarized. He discovered his entire cash register had been stolen.

“I really never expected someone to come in here and break in, because we just have polish and stuff,” Tran said, as a repairman from Kennedy Glass worked on the glass door of the business.

Police said they’re also investigating robberies at:

• Mr. Goodcents, 3220 Iowa.

• Eye Doctors, 2600 Iowa.

• 1/2 Baked, 1918 E. 23rd St.

• Rough Ends, 2004 E. 23rd St.

• Waterfront, 2004 E. 23rd St.

• Kitchen & Bath Design, 1800 E. 23rd St.

• Images Salon & Day Spa, 511 W. Ninth St.

• Sign d’sign, 2300 W. 31st St.

At 9:40 p.m. Monday, police were dispatched to a burglary alarm at Mr. Goodcents, said Sgt. Bill Cory, police spokesman. Officers began checking other businesses in the area and located the other break-ins.

“There are some similarities in how the crimes were committed but it is still too early to absolutely connect them all,” Cory said.

Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to call police at 832-7509 or Crimestoppers at 843-TIPS.
