Joy of giving

To the editor:

It is again that time of the year when I am overwhelmed with emotion in regard to the generosity of those living in our community. As we have progressed through 2008, the news regarding the economy and the difficulties others are experiencing floods the airwaves, and certainly at Ballard Community Services, we have witnessed the same in our community.

This year, we had 500 families apply for our Holiday Bureau adopt-a-family program, and, for the first time in the 27 years that we have been conducting the program, our families were all adopted in record time. This amounts to more than 3,000 people being treated to a brighter holiday season for their children.

I never cease to be surprised by the people living in Douglas County and how they reach out to help others. Consistently I read about how passionate the people of Douglas County are regarding many issues, but I would venture to guess that no one has an idea of just how dedicated people are to helping their neighbors. Every day I witness people arriving with boxes full of gifts, gift cards, meal cards, new shiny bikes and big smiles on their faces because they reached out to help someone else. Watching it unfold in our agency is just about the very best present anyone could ever receive, thank you.

May all of your wishes come true for a Happy Holiday Season and a very blessed New Year.
