Salvation Army drive still short of goal

The local Salvation Army Kettle Drive is nearing its end, and organizers say they still need cash.

With less than a week to go, The Salvation Army is nearly $45,000 short of its 2008 goal of $100,000.

Aaron Smith, Salvation Army community relations director, said the agency is hoping a late surge of donations can help it reach its goal.

“We really do need to be well beyond where we were last year just to meet the needs of this winter and the rest of 2009,” he said.

Eighty-three cents of every dollar donated to the Salvation Army goes to the needy, Smith said.

If you would like to help, you can drop off or mail your donation to the Salvation Army, 946 N.H., Lawrence, KS 66044. The kettle drive will last through Dec. 24.
