Keith Loneker still is defying expectations

I first encountered Keith Loneker in 2002 when he brought me in to help with a project involving his new record label/studio.

The imposing former NFL offensive lineman and Lawrence resident was putting together a bio for a fledgling hip-hop artist, and we gathered to discuss what needed to be included. I asked Loneker his opinion on a certain technical point, and he said, “As long as you don’t tell me how to block, I won’t tell you how to write.”

Given Loneker’s recent career moves in the film industry, I wonder if he still refers to himself in football terms. Or now does he use acting as his career parameter? (“Don’t tell me how to play a scene opposite Samuel L. Jackson, and I won’t tell you how to …”)

Perhaps he prefers alluding to teaching or coaching or parenting.

In this week’s issue of Go!, Lindsey Slater provides an update on the talented Loneker, who works alongside marquee movie stars and high school kids with equal enthusiasm.

Finding success this year through featured roles in “Lakeview Terrace” and “Leatherheads,” it’s anybody’s guess how far the ex-Jayhawk standout will be able to pursue Hollywood while grounding himself in the Lawrence community. But it’s pretty clear that Loneker has made a career out of defying expectations.

It wouldn’t be unreasonable to find out next he was professionally playing the cello, finishing a novel or dancing with a ballet troupe.

Well, probably not the dancing.
