Funds to aid residents with disabilities

Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center and the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority have received a $100,000 award that will help provide rental assistance for county residents with disabilities.

The award was given by the Kansas Housing Resources Corp. for continuation of the Douglas County agencies’ Community Support Services Home Tenant Based Rental Assistance program.

The award will benefit about 10 households. It helps people with disabilities transition from their parents’ care. It also provides assistance for people aging out of the foster care system and people displaced from institutions.

“It’s a real benefit to those with disabilities who have housing needs in the local community,” said Charlotte Knoche, director of housing assistance for Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority. “We’ve had people who were homeless who have been able to become housed permanently through this program over the years.”

Since 1993, the agency has received $1 million, which has helped about 250 households. To learn more about the program, contact Knoche at 842-8110, Ext. 2246.
