Police coax man down from roof

Lawrence police on Monday peacefully coaxed a man down from the roof of a bar after several hours.

Police received a call from a passerby at 12:15 p.m. about a man standing on the one-story roof of The Cadillac Ranch, 2515 W. Sixth St. Several officers took position in the area to watch the man for several hours.

About 3 p.m., an officer went onto the roof and started talking to the man. After several minutes the man tossed his duffel bag over to the officer.

Then the man approached two officers on the roof, and they climbed down inside the building.

Sgt. Michael Monroe said police believe the man had arrived in Lawrence in the morning because he had a bus ticket from Denver in his possession. The Greyhound bus station is across the street from the bar.

According to Douglas County Jail records, he is Brent Douglas Karlin, a 32 year-old transient. Monroe said police were trying to be cautious during the incident. They found nothing threatening in his possession.

Police took Karlin to the law enforcement center for a more extensive interview, and he was later booked into the jail on two municipal court charges: criminal trespass and criminal damage to property.
