Weekend house fire in east Lawrence was arson, official says

Investigators have determined a Sunday night house fire in east Lawrence was intentionally set, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Chief Mark Bradford said Tuesday.

The two-alarm fire, at 1321 E. 18th St., was reported by neighbors at 8:15 p.m. The three-bedroom home suffered $70,000 in damage, Bradford said.

He said the bulk of the damage, from heat and smoke, was in the center of the home. No injuries were reported.

The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The person who lived at the home was in the process of moving out, Bradford said.

Fire investigators are following a number of leads in the case, but Bradford also is asking anyone who might have seen activity in the area just before the fire to call 830-7000. Anonymous tips may be made to the CrimeStoppers hot line at 843-TIPS (8477).
