T investment

To the editor:

Dare I say it? Call our City Commission spineless for its cowardly handing off of the future of the T to a vote by citizens who likely aren’t patrons of the T and may be happy to deep-six it rather than invest in it. In fact I’d say that this was a calculated move by the City Commission to deflect any responsibility for the potential demise of this valuable community service – a service to those who experience a scarcity of resources, among others, and who need/choose the T to get to work.

A decision like this at a time when the value of the T couldn’t be more crucial to our community is callous at best. We all know the drill about automobile impact on environment, high gas prices, etc. (all valid reasons that support the need for public transportation), so instead of sending the T to a possible untimely demise, the commission could have had the courage to think (?) outside of the proverbial box and invest in the T to a degree that it becomes a more user-friendly system of transportation that garners more ridership and reduces traffic and its inherent hazards.

They could have, but they didn’t. Instead the commission has pursued a series of decisions over time that laid perceived evidence in their hands as justification for this misguided decision. Shame on you! Citizens of Lawrence, I challenge you to do the right thing on these votes and invest in the future of your community.
