Fire destroys two-story building

A fire in southern Leavenworth County destroyed a two-story building Monday.

Shortly after 10 a.m., firefighters from Reno Township and surrounding fire departments responded to a fire in the 11800 block of County Road 1, just south of Kansas Highway 32.

Windy Barnett, who was at home at the time with her son Terry Barnett II, said she noticed smoke coming from a detached workshop and garage on their property.

“I immediately called 911,” Windy said.

Eudora Fire Chief Randy Ates was at the scene of the fire.

He said firefighters tried to prevent the fire from spreading from the western side of the two-story building but were unable to control the flames. Once the fire spread to the entire building, the roof began to buckle and it eventually collapsed.

The entire structure, including nearly everything inside, was destroyed.

Firefighters were able to rescue one vehicle and a Bobcat loader from the fire. Windy said her cat lived in the building, and she wasn’t sure if it escaped in time. There were no other injuries reported.

“At least it wasn’t the house,” said Terry, who kept musical equipment in the building.

It is unknown what caused the fire, and an investigation is ongoing.
