Lawrence police are warning the public after a man tried to lure an 11-year-old girl into his vehicle.

Police say it happened about 6 p.m. Tuesday as the girl was walking in the parking lot of the Holcom Sports Complex.

The girl told police a man in an older-model, white SUV spoke to her and then motioned for her to get into the vehicle. She ran to the complex for help and went home and reported the incident to a relative.

Police searched the area but were unable to find the suspect, who is described as a Hispanic man in his late 30s, wearing an earring in one ear. He was last seen wearing a tan, short-sleeved T-shirt.

Police say the vehicle was possibly a Jeep with no license plates on the front or back.

The girl reported she last saw the vehicle heading east on 25th Street.
