Clean ants

To the editor:

The front page of April 25 Journal-World quotes a pest-control company that can rescue us from being driven "buggy," especially by ants. Before Lawrencians race to the phone to call an exterminator, they would do well to consider what the article omitted. While insecticides are not all alike, studies link many of these chemicals to cancer. By contrast, ants are extraordinarily clean insects. What they carry on their feet is what they picked up within a few inches of where they are, and bacterial loads on ants aren't much different from those in your home's air. So if we store our food next to biohazards such as insecticides, we might have reason to worry about the ants tracking poison onto our cookies. Surely it would be simpler to remove the biohazard or, better and healthier, not to buy it in the first place.

Take care of ants the natural and chemical free way. By an aardvark.

Pure peppermint or lemon oil work great. You can use them straight or dilute in witch hazel to use in a spray bottle. Don't be stingy, douse everything in the ants path, all windows and doors, and anywhere you suspect they are getting in. You can get everything (except the spray bottle) at The Merc. Don't panic it's organic!!!

Ants don't like chalk. Put some chalk lines around the area where they are prevalent, and they will quickly take a detour.

Is this Dr. Gibson? As in Jane Gibson, the anthropology professor? Anyway, pesticides kill things. That means they probably aren't good for any living organism to take into their body.

Yay Jane! The chalk approach really works. Also, you know, ants are just being ants and it seems wrong somehow to kill an ant just for doing what it needs to do to survive.

The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals would be better represented by PETA, not PITA.FWIW.

PETA means People Eating Tasty Animals. I also like Pita. Stuffed with ants? Interesting.Actually, I have accidently eaten those cute little black house ants. They are quite hot--like pepper.
