Search for missing canoeist called off

The search for a De Soto man who went missing while canoeing near Eudora on April 19 has ceased, said Lt. Doug Woods of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

A search and recovery effort was conducted by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, the sheriff’s office and several other local law enforcement agencies since Shaun Shaw, 26, fell into the river after his canoe capsized.

Shaw and friends were hunting for mushrooms on the Wakarusa River on April 19 when they hit rough waters near the Weaver Bottoms, about a mile and a half from Eudora. The canoe floated from the Wakarusa into the Kansas River, where it capsized. Shaw’s friends made it to shore.
