Reading festival set

The Altrusa Club of Lawrence announced the second annual River City Reading Festival will be Sept. 27 at the Lawrence Public Library.

Last year’s reading festival proved successful with more than 900 attendees and featured appearances by more than 50 authors.

“We were pleased with the turnout last year,” said Julie Tollefson, of Altrusa Club, a service organization that promotes literacy. “For the first time we tried something like this, I thought we got great community support. We look forward to improving on that this year.”

The festival will be similar to last year’s, which featured workshops for children, teens and adults, and popular storybook characters. So far, 30 authors have tentatively agreed to read during the festival. The list includes poet Denise Low of Lawrence, children’s author Jane Kurtz of Lawrence and Max McCoy, a mystery author from Emporia.

The location has been moved from the Lawrence Arts Center to the library, 707 Vt. Kassie Edwards, festival chairwoman, said the library building and lawn will offer room to expand the festival. Details are still being worked out, but volunteers are being sought now. Last year, about 100 volunteers helped with the event.

“We need tons of volunteers to make this a success,” Tollefson said.

Anyone who wants to volunteer can visit www.rivercityreadingfestival.org or call 979-9306.

Organizations such as Kansas University Libraries, KU Department of Teaching and Leadership and the Lawrence Arts Center are helping. The festival will feature food vendors and book sales.
