Andrea McMurray of Cottonwood Inc., Lawrence, is the American Network of Community Options and Resources’ 2008 Kansas Direct Support Professional of the Year.

Such professionals – often referred to as caregivers, personal assistants or homecare aides – provide daily support for people with disabilities so that they are able to live better, more independent lives.

“Ms. McMurray represents the best of the best” among such professionals, said Peter Kowalski, the network’s president. “Her commitment allows the people she serves to live more inclusive, independent and self-determined lives.”

McMurray received the award last week during the network’s annual conference in New Orleans.

The network represents more than 850 private providers of community living and employment supports and services for more than 385,000 individuals with disabilities.
