Where are the real heroes?

To the editor:

Nestled in the northeast corner of Kansas, Kansas University men’s basketball wrote into the history books an outstanding feat. The chaos that followed mirrored the masses lined up to view the Christ child. The parade yielded cheering fans touching the cars of the team as if by just a simple contact one could better their own lives. At the fieldhouse, I overheard a woman screaming into her phone “The 20th row! Are you serious! Can you even SEE their faces?”

Are you kidding ME? Was SHE serious? From a business standpoint, I understand the university and this town reaped the benefits of crazed KU fans. What I do not grasp is why these boys are heroes. March Madness rang true to the point even I, who hadn’t watched a game all season, was suddenly the foremost authority and representative for KU. Here’s my question: Where have all the REAL heroes gone? Why can we have a parade for the players but cannot for the men and women who fight daily to allow us, even the players, the ability to pursue our dreams?

I do not understand how people view these boys to be more than talented, almost godly. They are gifted young athletes. Yes. They are not any better or any closer to godliness than us. They had a lucky streak, combined with hard work that is just that much better than the other groups of boys that could have been in their spot.
