BNSF replacing ties, reconditioning base

Burlington Northern Santa Fe is replacing and rehabilitating rail ties between Kansas City, Kan., and Tecumseh, part of its regular maintenance program.

The project, which started Thursday and is scheduled to last through May 29, will cover more than 46 miles and include the area that runs through Lawrence along the south side of the Kansas River, said Steven Forsberg, a BNSF spokesman.

Crews are replacing more than 110,000 railroad ties. Surfacing work – using a tamping machine to recondition and repack rocks under the tracks – also will be conducted, Forsberg said.

Work will be done during the day and should not cause any delays, he said, as trains – including Amtrak – typically run at night.
