Free boating safety course offered

A one-day boating safety class is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Fire & Medical Department Station No. 5, 1911 Stewart Ave. The course is offered by members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The course is free and purchase of a course textbook is optional.

The course covers boat types and marine motors, pre-underway activities and trailering, boat handling and navigation rules, and legal requirements of boating, among other topics. Successful completion of the course meets state requirements for people age 12 to 21 to operate a motorboat, sailboat or personal watercraft.
