Lawmaker to serve on electricity committee

State Rep. Tom Sloan, R-Lawrence, has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Electricity Advisory Committee.

Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman appointed Sloan to the committee to represent the viewpoints of state legislators.

The committee is tasked with helping define a strategy for long-range planning and priorities regarding the modernization of the country’s infrastructure for delivering electricity.

Sloan said he was pleased to be asked to serve and looks forward to sharing information about ways to increase the deployment of smart-grid technologies, guide investments in energy storage technologies and improve integration of renewable energy resources into the country’s electric grid system.

Committee membership is limited to no more than 30 representatives of electric producers, consumers, environmental organizations, state utility regulators, regional transmission organizations and other stakeholders.

Sloan is a member of the House Energy & Utilities Committee.
