Day-care operator appeals suspension

A Lawrence woman is appealing the suspension of her license to operate a day-care home, and will get a chance to state her case before a hearing officer.

Deborah Kay Henning, whose license was suspended March 27 under suspicion of child abuse of a 1-year-old boy under care at her home, filed an appeal this week with state officials, disputing the suspension issued by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

KDHE issued the emergency suspension after a social worker reported that the boy at the day care, 1502 W. 27th St., allegedly had suffered burns on his legs, ankles and buttocks.

Henning, who has described the matter as a “total misunderstanding,” was unavailable for comment Thursday evening.

Joe Blubaugh, a KDHE spokesman, confirmed the appeal Thursday and said that the suspension would remain in effect “until a hearing officer rules, one way or the other.” No hearing date has been set.
