Friendly Rivalry

Lawrence High’s varsity and junior varsity boys tennis programs found themselves in a unique situation at Saturday’s round-robin tournament at LHS. Both teams were in the same bracket, which meant they all got the chance to compete against each other in a regular season invitational.

“This is one of the only tournaments where we have two teams,” No. 1 JV singles player Spencer Renfro said. “It was a lot of fun.”

Perhaps the most compelling match of the day for smack-talking purposes was Renfro against Taylor Seratte, LHS’s top varsity singles player.

“Spencer Renfro claimed that he beat me in a match in junior high, and I do not recall this,” Seratte said. “We had been talking about this for weeks now.”

Seratte eventually won, 8-0.

“I’m glad to get it off the table,” Renfro said jokingly. “The rumors are put to sleep.”

Free State Bowler Honored

Free State’s Alex Hardman recently became the first Firebird named to the Class 6A all-state bowling team.

Hardman averaged a 211 for the season and has some outstanding tournament performances along the way.

Tyler Kring also was named second team all-metro, after finishing second at league.

Rough and Tough

Last week’s city showdown between the Lawrence High and Free State High girls soccer teams was one of the most physical games for both teams so far this season.

From the opening whistle on, players from both teams threw their bodies all over the field, going hard after every loose ball and battling for possession during FSHS’s 1-0 victory.

“I don’t know if this was the most physical game I’ve ever played in, but I guess the hardness of everything was what made it stand out,” said FSHS senior Leah Williams. “Everybody played so hard today. It was a lot of fun, but I do have a few bruises.”
