Poor turnout

To the editor:

Tuesday’s voter turnout was very disappointing. It doesn’t matter who won, but what does matter is that only about 12 percent of registered voters took the time to go vote. With a population of about 88,000 in Lawrence, it is inexcusable that less than 7,600 people voted.

I don’t understand how people can be so lazy that they don’t vote. I know some people have very hectic lives dealing with family and work, but that is no excuse to not know that an election is being held. I can see why some of Lawrence’s citizens who want to make a difference just give up trying.

The ones that didn’t go vote probably won’t read this letter either because they don’t watch Channel 6 News or read the paper. It probably doesn’t concern them either about the thousands that have perished protecting our right to vote. I don’t want to sound preachy, but they deserve the government they get.
