Undersheriff nominated to replace sheriff

Undersheriff Jeff Herrig has been nominated by Jefferson County Republican leaders as the next sheriff.

Herrig was the only person nominated for the position, according to Travis Oliver, Republican Central Committee chairman. He said a letter has been sent to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius with Herrig’s nomination. The governor has seven days after receiving the letter to make a ceremonial appointment.

Herrig will replace longtime Sheriff Roy Dunnaway, whose last day on the job was Monday. The next election is November, and Herrig has already filed as a candidate. The Republican committee met Tuesday night in the Jefferson County Courthouse.

“I think Jeff will be a good sheriff. He’s been the under-sheriff for a long time,” Oliver said.
