Sex crime reports released by police

April 2, 2008

Reports on several sex crimes that have occurred since November were released Tuesday by the Lawrence Police Department.

Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Fellers said he didn't know why the information wasn't released sooner. But, he said, oftentimes after the incidents are reported, police may not have an opportunity to talk to those involved for a period of time.

"Obviously, we do not want to put any information out to forewarn individuals that we may be wanting to talk to or (who) might interfere with our ability to conduct an investigation," Fellers said.

Here are the cases posted on the police Web site:

¢ Police investigated a report that a 20-year-old Topeka man raped a 21-year-old Topeka woman. The incident allegedly occurred Nov. 30, 2007, at a central Lawrence apartment complex but wasn't reported to police until February. The suspect and victim are acquaintances.

¢ Police are investigating an incident in which two 18-year-old Lawrence men had illegal sexual relations with a 14-year-old Overland Park girl. The incident allegedly occurred at a North Lawrence hotel between 3 a.m. Feb. 15 and 7 a.m. Feb. 16. The victim and suspects are acquaintances.

¢ An 18-year-old Lawrence man allegedly had illegal sexual relations with a 15-year-old Overland Park girl at a south Lawrence residence. It allegedly occurred between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Feb. 9. It was reported to police Feb. 17. Police say this is a separate incident, but related to the Feb. 15-16 incident. Police are still investigating.

¢ A 20-year-old Lawrence woman reported that she was raped by two men at her residence north of Sixth Street in Lawrence. The suspects were described as two unidentified white men. No date of occurrence was listed.

¢ A 31-year-old Lawrence woman told police she was walking along Seventh Street when an unidentified man approached her from behind and tried to grab her purse. The man touched her illegally, and she fought with him. The man ran south into an alley between Seventh and Eighth streets along Kentucky Street. The incident occurred at 9:50 p.m. March 8. The victim was not injured, and nothing was taken. The suspect was described as a black man, 5-foot-11, with a slim build and short hair.

¢ Lawrence police assisted the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in a child abuse investigation. No date for the case was listed.

¢ A 20-year-old Lawrence woman told police an unidentified man called her on the phone and asked her to have sex with him. The incident occurred at 10:52 p.m. Feb. 23 at a south Lawrence home.

So does calling for a little loving violate the Do Not Call list?

I could see her being scared if1- It was a landline, and not a cell phone2- Her number was listed in the phone book3- Her address was listed alongside her number.. in the phone book. Now, all you need is a dark stormy night with her all alone, and it's the classic start to a horror movie, but not funny or entertaining at all... like a horror movie.
